Magnus’ reign was one marked with great ambition. Gaining the throne by usurping against emperor Gratian and negotiating with emperor Theodosius I, he used his reign to expand into Italy, Pannonia, Hispanic, and Africa. In the view of some historians, his death marked the end of direct imperial presence in Northern Gaul and Britain.
